Hillary Rodham was born in Chicago and received her undergraduate education at Wellesley College. In 1969 Rodham entered Yale Law School, where she served on the Board of Editors of the Yale Review of Law and Social Action. After completing law school and passing the bar exam, Rodham became a staff attorney for the Children’s Defense Fund in Washington, D.C., in 1973. Two years later, Rodham left Washington for Arkansas, where she married Bill Clinton, a fellow law student from Yale. Their daughter, Chelsea, was born in 1980. While in Arkansas, Hillary continued to work on behalf of children and families. She founded the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families, served on the board of the Arkansas Children’s Hospital, and was chair of the Arkansas Education Standards Committee. After Bill Clinton was elected president in 1992, Hillary served as the head of President Clinton’s Task Force on National Health Care Reform. She also supported the performing arts and promoted women’s rights throughout the world. She served as first lady for a second term, after her husband was re-elected in 1996. In 1999 she began campaigning to represent New York in the U.S. Senate.
